DIY: the ONE SHOT

By Mimi

I wanna share with you the beautiful thing that is the ONE SHOT. Basically the ONE SHOT is a mini-comic/zine/book type thing that's made using a single sheet of 8 1/2 X11 paper. meaning, of course, they're cheap to reproduce at any copy joint, as well as super easy to five-finger on the sly at work, if you're into that kinda thing. what makes me happy about this project, is it's really easy to share your work with others or, if you're selling them, they can actually pay for themselves with a minimal selling price.

materials

-8 1/2 x 11inch sheets of paper

-pencil and/or pen

-photocopier

-exacto knife

-a piece of board that you can cut on

process

1)take a standard piece of paper (8 1/2 x 11) and fold it in half the long way, and then unfold.

2)take that same piece of paper and fold it in half the short way, and then unfold.

http://bychrisjohn.com/misc/ljfecalface/instruction1and2.jpg

3)take the 8 1/2 ends and fold each of them to the center crease, and then unfold. there are now 8 frames on your sheet of paper. you've created the basic template.

instruction3.jpg

4)decide how you're gonna lay out your work.

*If you're planning on creating something in booklet form; the second frame from the left, on the bottom, will be your front cover, and the first frame on the bottom left will be your back cover.

*If you wanna get really tricky, plan on using both sides of the paper, which will give you 16 frames. when you're laying down your work for a 16 frame booklet, you need to use 2 single-sided sheets of paper, otherwise you will have a bleed through issue. you will select DOUBLE SIDED FROM SINGLE SIDED (1 side->2 sided) when you copy, to put the thing together. i suggest that you indicate somewhere in your work that the reader will need to flip the that sucker inside out, as it's not such an obvious thing as one might be tempted to think it is.

5)put your work onto the template

6)make the photocopies; each copy will be one complete ONE SHOT(do yourself the favor of fiddling with the contrast/darkness BEFORE you hit 20-go!)

7)fold all copies the same way as your template.

8)Take the exacto knife, and placing your sheet on the cutting board, slit the paper along the 11 fold, through the middle two frames ONLY.

9)ONE SHOTS will practically fold up themselves, but you do need to guide them so your front and back covers show in the correct way.

10)use marker or paint pens to add a little extra sparkle to the covers.

have lots of fun selling them or handing them out to your friends.

1:33 am - Im seriously becoming a grumpy old man.
(Disclaimer: If you like Fall Out Boy, and are reading this, chances are that I like you, but probably not your taste in music, or maybe I even like your taste in music, just not Fall Out Boy.)

We got Nirvana's "Nevermind" in at work. Which is weird (and rad) because we play stupid horrible 'hip' crap like The Bravery, M.I.A. and Louis XIV. Even weirder (or not weird at all) is that 2 coworkers who love Fall Out Boy thought it was lame that we got the cd. Even further proving Jasons point that "Fall Out Boy is for Lovers... of horrible music." And while on topic of Fall Out Boy, can someone tell me what the hell he is saying in their new song? Actually, if you don't know the lyrics, and havent heard the song, I think its called "Sugar were going down" or something, see what you make of them, because it could be quite comical to see. Here's my interpretation of the chorus:

"Were goin' dow toe in da do de lo rowd
and sugar were goin down swingin
I be a number one with the bullen
A lonen go kompleh scoken in pullen"

And tell them to not do screaming background vocals... seriously... its constructive criticism.

I saw Willy Wonka tonight. It was OK. See it if you feel lucky enough not to waste $9.50.

"Radiohead break silence over new album

Radiohead have broken the silence over their new album. Thom Yorke has told nme.com sessions for their new album remind him of working on "Kid A". The band recently regrouped to start rehearsing and recording new songs for the follow-up to 2003's "Hail To The Thief".

The album, not due until next year, will be the band's seventh. Thom said that early sessions had seen the band changing the way they work, reminding him of the change between 1997 LP "OK Computer" and "Kid A". He said: "It's going well. It's a bit like "Kid A" - we're going through a period of change. But that's good. We'll get there"."

Did someone forget to mention to Fall Out Boy that screaming background vocals were faux pas even before they became unpopular 3 years ago?

1:09 am - wow
I was watching this thing on child stars, and how they wash up and start sucking at life really bad, because their heyday is over.

I kinda feel like that right now. Im slowly realizing that Im not really as good as I thought at things that I love, such as:
Being a friend
Being a son
Being a Christian
Being smart
Being good at things

Yep. Life is ripping along right now, but Im excited to move again. Hopefully Being a roommate wont be on that list above.

1:19 pm - Stencil art is boring.
Im getting really sick of stencil art, minus Banksy <edit>(and mica)</edit> . Banksy is ok in my book because he is really good. Otherwise, Im tired of stencil art. But if it makes you happy, you should do it. I'm just tired of seeing it, because thats all anyone wastes their time with nowadays.

PS. If you do stencil art, and I know you and like you, I will edit you in.

"Ohio Is For Lovers"
by Hawthorne Heights

Hey there,
I know it's hard to feel like I don't care at all.
Where you are and how you feel.
With these lights off as these wheels
keep rolling on and on. (and on and on and on...)
Slow things down or speed them up.
Not enough or way too much. (and on and on and on...)
How are you when I'm gone?

[Chorus:]
And I can't make it on my own.
(And I can't make it on my own.)
Because my heart is in Ohio.
So cut my wrists and black my eyes.
(Cut my wrists and black my eyes)
So I can fall asleep tonight, or die.
Because you kill me.
You know you do, you kill me well.
You like it too, and I can tell.
You never stop until my final breath is gone.

Spare me just three last words.
"I love you" is all she heard.
I'll wait for you, but I can't wait forever.

Wow, people actually get away with putting this bullcrap out? If I made a joke screamo band and wrote a song, Im pretty sure it would have these lyrics, and the same chord progression. Heres a pretty good general rule of thumb when you buy music. If it has this anywhere on it:

DO NOT BUY IT.
